What is Bonsai & Penjing - Explained

Translating to "planted in a container," bonsai blends horticulture and fine art. Through precise pruning and wiring, artists create miniature illusions of age and natural resilience. While Japanese bonsai often focuses heavily on the single tree—distilling its essence and form—its older Chinese counterpart, penjing ("tray scenery"), gives more room to a broader scene. Penjing often incorporates rocks, water elements, and miniature terrain to suggest a sweeping valley or windswept mountain. Both traditions require immense patience across the seasons and reward close, slow looking. A fine tree may carry many years of careful recovery and shaping, sometimes passing between growers across generations.
